What It Takes To Win Fantasy Football

There seems to be a big difference between what people think matters most when it comes to Fantasy Football. I hear things all the time from people like "If your draft well then you really don't need to make too many moves during the season". Another common misnomer is when people think that the key to winning is just to be lucky and avoid having your stars injured. But they are wrong too, there's a lot more going on than just avoiding injuries and drafting well. How about "It's all luck anyways, I won't waste too much time researching I'll just grab the hot players on Free Agency and let the rest work itself out." If you can't put the winning formula into one sentence then you are doomed to repeat in your losing ways. Success in Fantasy Football is a multifaceted game. Sure there's luck and skill involved, but there's also a lot of stuff that happens behind the scenes that most owners never pick up. To save you from another wall of text, I have created the "What it takes to win your fantasy football league" pie chart.

Fantasy Football: Watch Your Players and League Transactions Like a Hawk

Fantasy Football: Watch Your Players and League Transactions Like a Hawk Even When You Are Busy With Life

Here's a little protip that I have been using to help me keep track of everything that goes on in my Yahoo! fantasy leagues. Having status updates sent to me without having to incessantly check on my fantasy apps has been a life saver. Although it may seem crazy to have every little status update sent to you via SMS message. It has never been unbearable to receive a handful of updates a week that have saved my tail from time to time.

How did I set this up?

It's very easy and you don't even need to be tech savvy to accomplish this. I use a website called ifttt.com which can automate pretty much anything that happens in the online world. You can automatically save Instagram pictures to Dropbox, save quick ideas to Evernote or turn on and off the lights in your home.

The steps are pretty simple:

1. Sign up at

2. Use this link to go to the Yahoo! Sports Recipe to get player updates.

IFTTT Recipe: Watch your players' health/status like a hawk connects yahoo-fantasy-sports to sms

2b. Use this link to go to the Yahoo! Sports Recipe to get player league transaction notifications.

IFTTT Recipe: Keep track of transactions in your fantasy league via SMS connects yahoo-fantasy-sports to sms

3. Authenticate your Yahoo account when pressing the "Activate Channel" button and enter your cell phone number you want to receive the SMS messages on.

4. You can choose which leagues you want to be notified on if you decide that some leagues are more important than others.

Other Options:

This can also be done by iOS or Android Push Notifications as well if you prefer. I have found that SMS messages have worked out best where I will make sure I check rather than dismiss with all the other push notifications I get and rather not see.

IFTTT Recipe: Follow breaking Fantasy Football news via Android Notifications connects espn to android-notifications

The alerts can be forwards to your Pebble Watch or Android Wear device if you prefer, a recipe for the Apple Watch is probably in the works soon as well.

IFTTT Recipe: Yahoo fantasy football player updates connects yahoo-fantasy-sports to android-wear
IFTTT Recipe: #pushover a notification to #pebble when any player on my #fantasyfootball team has a status change. connects yahoo-fantasy-sports to pushover

You can have a spreadsheet automatically created with all the breaking news of the day if that seems to work better for you.

IFTTT Recipe: Create an ESPN News spreadsheet for Fantasy Football connects espn to google-drive

Lastly, you can automate your wins and losses at the end of every week automatically to Twitter which is pretty bad ass. Especially when you win.

IFTTT Recipe: Tweet my Fantasy Football standings after the game connects yahoo-fantasy-sports to twitter

Mix and match these services to your own liking. Thanks for reading and good luck in your Fantasy Football endevors. If you find this helpful please let me know by commenting here or tweeting me @fantasybroapp on Twitter. Don't forget to subscribe for all the fantasy football life hacks to come!

Fantasy Stereotypes: You Know Who They Are and How to Beat Them

Hey Guys,

Hope all is well in the shakeup of an offseason. There have been plenty of movers and shakers in both the NFL Power Rankings as well as some interesting depth chart issues. Don't even get me started on the prospect of Demarco Murray, Darren Sproles and Ryan Mathew all splitting carries for the Phillidelipha Eagles this season. How will Brandon Marshall fair alongside Eric Decker with the immortal Geno Smith at the helm? In the next coming weeks are you prepare for your Fantasy Football drafts we will tackle these issues.

But back to Fantasy Football stereotypes. We all have friends, family and co-workers who fit the profiles outlined in the YouTube video below. Each stereotype comes with a fatal flaw which can be used against him during the fantasy football season. May the fantasy odds always be in your favor.

Once we can identify each of the individuals that fall prey to one a stereotype we can use this information to our advantage. Here's a list of who they are and how and when to exploit them.

The Homer:

The typical Fantasy Football Owner who plays favorites with his roster choices. This owner is known for consistently drafting players from the teams he roots hardest for. The homer does this with little regard for average draft position (ADP) or actual Fantasy output.

Exploit:

Getting under the skin of the homer is quite easy, just draft players you know he covets. This is easy to accomplish since he can't draft all the high quality Fantasy Football players at once. They should be ample opportunities to draft skilled position players without reaching beyond that player's ADP.  It's important to exploit the homer as long as it isn't at the detriment of your own Fantasy Football team.  Chances are you will be able to have them overpay during the season via trade for these players you went out of your way to grab.

Mr. Know It All:

This owner goes above and beyond to read every cheat sheet available. Watches the NFL combine, analyzes each offseason move carefully and subscribes to paid Fantasy resources. This type of owner lives and dies by the projected points of his players. Injuries, trade rumors, and depth chart dangers are dismissed for the almighty projected point algorithm of choice.

Exploit:

Well to be honest, there isn't an easy way to take down this type of Fantasy owner. Statistics are huge indicators on potential outcomes of Fantasy Football.  Projected versus actual performances can be quite different. That's why the games are played. Anyone can do anything on any given Sunday. If you use statistics such as touches, targets or snaps while in trade negotiations you are more likely to work out a trade. Use your gut when making your decisions because numbers don't tell the whole story all the time.

The Ridiculous Trader:

This guy is usually the annoy and persistent owner who continues to spam the league's members with lopsided trades. A big pop-over window should appear when receiving these trades that says. " Are you sure you want to get ripped off?".

Exploit:

At some point, it could be worth it to trade away the cornerstone of your fantasy team in exchange for some side cash. While this is highly immoral, it's not a terrible way to recover some of your financial investment in a lost Fantasy season. You will probably catch some flack for this, possibly even have the trade vetoed. I have seen owners banned from leagues for this type of collusion. However, in the world of Fantasy Football I have seen morals compromised for much less.

The Commish:

The commissioner of a fantasy football league is supposed to be a person of high moral character. They will not be influenced by one whiny owner who pleads for a rule change or for a trade veto. The commissioner may have some odd point scoring system or rules that may differ from traditional fantasy league formats. The commissioner can be abrasive and try to rule with an iron fist. But hey, it isn't easy being the commissioner, dealing with the trials and tribulations of trade disputes.

Exploit:

There aren't many chinks in the suit of armor on this one. Criticism is rarely met with agreement and a victory over a rule change or trade dispute. You can however, achieve a common goal if you are able to get the majority of your league to fight in favor for something regardless of the commissioner's opinion on the matter. This is your best bet, also it never hurts to be "buddy buddy" with the commissioner. Sometimes all it takes its a little birdy to implant a subtle suggestion that could become fantasy law.

Protip: Pay your league dues early, you will score some bonus points with the commissioner.

The Overreactor / Rage Monster:

The rage monster lives and dies with every win and loss during the season. His motions are erratic, depending on which way the wind blows. Count on lots of roster movement throughout the season as he grows tired of underperforming players. His short leash antics and overreactions will lead to a high turnover rate of players. Some good ones worth keeping will hit the waiver wire so keep your eyes peeled.

Exploit:

The rage monster, while someone you wouldn't want within an arm's reach of your finest china may be your best ally in acquiring talented players. The rage monster may be quick to give up on a high draft pick who has been riddled with injuries. The rage monster see's little value in players who don't suit up on game day. You should have your eyes on the prize, knowing that an underperformer today may be a total stud come keep in the playoff race, The rage monster is more susceptible to trades that yield short-term gains in return for long-term successes.

The Autodrafter:

The autodrafter rolls the dice, either by being unavailable for the draft or by running out of time due to indecision. These owners are generally weak minded and don't invest the same amounts of time and effort. Within the definition of the autodrafter is it's own greatest weakness. Most autodrafts are based on the best player available which could in fact, produce a hefty roster of players. Autodrafters do win championships, it's possible if the owner has great knowledge for the game or just drafts with an incredible amount of luck. The autodrafter tends to get players that no one else in the league is high on or has slept on. You could autodraft an impressive squad or a team with three Quarterbacks, two kickers and two special teams/ team defenses.

Exploit:

While through luck or misfortune, the autodrafter's team will be filled with sleepers or aging hasbeens. Autodrafters tend to be newer or casual owners who neglect their lineups and disregard making roster moves unless absolutely necessary, The autodrafter leaves his team to luck and the almighty algorithm which drafted the team. No need to find weaknesses in the autodrafter's skill set. The autodrafter often defeats himself.

Mr. Feeling:

Mr. Feeling is the anti-Mr.Knowitall. He makes roster moves based on gut instincts alone with little to no research behind his moves. Mr. Feeling can waste precious roster spots on players who won't ever produce. Mr. Feeling bases most of his "gut" on the perceived skill of players. Mr. Feeling probably gets most of his information from one source or catches some of the hype in players from ESPN highlight reels and sports talk radio.

Exploit:

Sell high on players he is enamored with. While it may be hard to acquire players from him that he admires, you may be able to coax out a player who has recently cooled down in the past few weeks. Fantasy Football is a whirlwind of emotion dictated by performance, water cooler chats and the media. Play to his inability to separate true value from his over-hyped and sometimes random "feels" for certain players.

Vince Lombardi Never Worried About SEO

As I'm learning and reflecting upon, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is everything. Without it even the best products would never be seen or found.

Here are my experiences so far in my climb to the top of the Google Rankings.

SEO, my visibility via search engines right now is really terrible, and by really terrible I mean that I wouldn't show up on Google or Bing with a direct entry of my web domain FantasyBroSports.com. Forget any other common keywords that should give me some sort of relevancy such as Fantasy Football, iOS Applications, Fantasy etc.

Content: Still working on different ways to display information about Fantasy Bro Sports. Should I refer to it as FBS (Feel free to leave a comment below)moving forward just because it's probably quicker for me to type and possibly quicker for you to read. However see the above problem about SEO and I'm no expert about SEO yet but repeating my domain name a million times just might do it.

I don't think SquareSpace has helped the situation from an SEO standpoint. At the time I chose them because it was super simple to get started.

I didn't have to purchase a template from some third-party. In my first draft of this I used the term Zero to One Hundred real quick, I'm apprehensive to keep it but I'll keep my Drake-isms to myself.

There were no hoops to jump through, the templates are beautiful and with a one week trial I was able to preview what I wanted and had a good idea of what I was getting.

It happened to come with an extra domain name ( So I own MichaelMuss.com too) which was a nice bonus. Also I was able to support the Joe Rogan Podcast with coupon code: JOE or whatever it was at the time. This podcast has always kept me stimulated and laughing even when I was banging my head up against a wall when my App would crash or give obscure error logs that I couldn't decipher for days. Perhaps one day soon I'll have time to launch my own Fantasy BS podcast.

The downside to have everything prebuilt on SquareSpace is the ability to customize the website itself. It’s possible that I am just a complete noob when it comes to SquareSpace and I have yet figured out how to have my newsletter sign-up come as a splash page. (See the link above or check out www.fantasybrosports.com/news to see what I mean).

As commonly experienced in the past, when businesses offer free content such as e-books and coupon codes. There is a splash page that the user at a very minimum has to dismiss.

It's generally a value for value model where you barter your email address for a free eBook or something of that nature.  (The eBook just might be on the way)

So far it doesn't see that SquareSpace will allow such code-injection on the landing page which will make me question what decisions I may make at the end of my pre-paid year.

Got a great recommendation to help us get this Fantasy Football revolution off the ground?

Choosing A Domain: A Story filled with Turnovers and Triumph

Click here now: http://tinyurl.com/feeling-lucky-cj This is a compilation of the best NFL Fantasy Player Files. Each video contains a different NFL player doing a cool move whether its passing, catching, or kicking the football. Have fun ! :)

The Anatomy of a Domain: A Story of Headaches and Triumph

Setting up the Website:

Choosing an available domain that is pronounceable, affordable and relevant to your product is one of the more nerve racking and nail biting adventures.

I probably have 45 different names that I thought of while sitting on the throne one weekend. (Don't worry I totally took breaks for coffee and snacks).

Once you have out a couple different directions you would like try, comes the scary part. Punching them into GoDaddy or whatever Domain Service you choose.

FantasyLineup - Taken
FantasyLegend - taken
FantasyLegends - Taken
FantasyFootballApp - Taken
Fantasy Bros - Taken

… See where I'm going with this, and once you find one that is available it sort of that moment where someone is trying to sell you a $1,000 Bose Surround Sound System for $15.99.

Hmm well it looks okay right? I'm sure it'll sound good when I play music. It's not a huge investment I might as well take the small risk.

So you finally decide to pull the trigger. TAKEN ... Something is fishy, maybe I shouldn't have punched it in the checked it's availability so many times.

Did someone I know buy it up right from under me? I did ask a few people if the name sounded okay before I went to pull the trigger the next morning.

F!... so to make a long story short, unless you have a very unique brand name that one one else wants do count on your first choice for domains to be out there.

If you want to dabble in the world of the (co, BIZ, TV, NYC, etc.) feel free. But as long as someone else owns that .com domain.

Can your start-up ever really feel like it's yours? You may have spent a good portion of your life, sharing a room or even a bed with a sibling.

For your big moment to shine, to pour your heart into a project all of your own do you still want that sense of sharing a space with someone?

Regardless if the domain is an abandoned blog, direct competitor or sex toys ecommerce site. You aren't married to anything yet; you can still manage something else.

And that was the run down of the domain purchasing escapades. I finally settled on FantasybroSports.com ... surprise surprise. If you managed to make it this far without seeing
Fantasy Bro Sports lining every crevice of this website, Twitter and maybe my lower back one day (Need to cover up this Pink Butterfly tattoo somehow).

So boom! Email confirmation, mashed in my credit card number and now FantasyBroSports.com is now mine. So just like every minor accomplishment you make along the way, you have to blast it out on every Social Platform you have ever signed up for. Pulling out the Yellow Pages to look up lost classmates (at least for the ones that have finally escaped the wrath of the Facebook). Doesn't everyone want to hear about my new Fantasy Football website?

Tell your parents! and subsequently explain to your parents what it means to own a domain name. The process involved and why I couldn't get anything catchier like "FantasyExpert.com".

"Can I see it?" ... these four words shot through my chest like a gunshot. I barely have anything at all ... I have the rights to point a series of ASCII characters towards an ipv4 public web server.

I still need a host.

Any if you thought choosing the perfect (out of the available pool) domains, try figuring out whether to go with SquareSpace or Bluehost / WordPress.

I might save this for another day and another blog post.

Search Engine Optimization: (SEO) - Why am I not getting any hits?

I got my flashy new website from SquareSpace jumped through a couple hoops to get everything redirecting properly now how do I get people here?

Apparently "Build it and they will come" does not apply to generating traffic to your website.

Finally got indexed on Google: (Courtesy of Google Webmaster Tools)

So the days of adding "Fantasy Football" in black font on a black background on a webpage is not long suitable to get ranked on Google. I'll detail all the tips and tricks I've come across with links to these high quality resources in the near future.

As you can see below it's important to have your brand be associated with relevant keywords so people can find you when they search. As you can see there is still much work to be done.

contentrelevance-fantasy-football-fantasybrosports

Now that I finally have a steady stream of daily visitors, I need to find a reason to keep these people entertained as well as adding valuable content to keep them coming back.

Now it’s finally time to add some valuable Fantasy Football related content, and just as hard as it is that first day of high school when they stick you in Homeroom or August Madness as they called it many moons ago when I was in High School. Coming up with some grandiose way of introducing yourself is pretty difficult when you are put on the spot.

Which lead me to ask myself, are we a software company? At the end of the day that is ultimately the final product we are producing.

Then again, are we Fantasy Football advice blog rolled into an iPhone App.

When I've mentioned to my friends and family, "Hey I'm starting up my own business called Fantasy Bro Sports ..."

The dumbfounded looks on peoples faces as I tried to describe the blogging and iOS app portions of what I plan on doing really made me question if this whole thing was even viable. Don't get me wrong there were plenty of "Oh thats really cool i hope it goes well" which in reality were mostly polite ways to segue off topic. In a nervous defensive fit I started throwing out phrases like "it's a algorithmic analytical tool to help users decide on which players to start on their fantasy teams" which kind of sort of summarized what this is but boy the more verbiage I threw at them the less and less interested they were at hearing more. The one semi-positive reaction I got from people is when I mentioned the possibility of a Fantasy Football Podcast and many were quick to volunteer to become

After some time alone I broke it down to this:

"Fantasy Bro Sports is iOS app that takes the pain out of managing your Fantasy Football team"

I can't stress how important it is to use the KISS method (keep it simple silly) when pitching or shamelessly promoting your project or business.

More to come where we dissect our business identity and thank you for reading!

Fantasy Bro Sports - "It's perfect, I promise"

What is Peek Testing?

Feel free to check them out here: http://peek.usertesting.com/

Peek Testing is a service that someone give you feedback on your website, they are supposed to be like real regular users that could land on your site. They are not necessarily UX design critics which can be helpful to finding design issues that the "average user" could get tripped up on.

Initially I was not sure how to feel about the user’s reaction to Fantasy Bro Sports.

He liked that it was clean and all and it was obvious that it was about a Fantasy Football App and that's when things went down hill.

He didn't check out all of the above links additional content and when he did he read two sentences and stopped.

Initially I was angry with the user, but could it have been my user interface?

So after checking out many other blogs and sales websites and comparing it to my own I could tell there was plenty of work to be done.

What is this website for?

How was the user supposed to know that this is for a fantasy football app? Besides a lonesome picture of a iPhone mock up with a football field on the screen, the purpose is not obvious.

Secondly there was no call to action.

There was no "subscribe to our blog", "Available in the App Store now". With no call to action and the mailing list buried in it's own page, no information about how the app works, and where and when would it be available.

My about the app section was bare, and my about me section was and still sort of is a wall of text. Nothing stands out, almost as interesting as page 719 of Webster's Dictionary.

I left myself with a much larger to do list than I expected considering that I ran the Peek Testing as a way to gauge how great my website layout was and the validation of a great job.

Maybe the key is to never feel like you are finished.

Thanks for reading!

Fantasy Bro Sports Blog - "It Can't be Done"

All we hear now a days as an IOS developer is, the App Store is full! 80 percent of iOS developers live below the poverty line.

Everything that could ever be made has already been.

The market has matured, there cannot be something fresh.

The ecosystem is too competitive to earn a livable income.

So what am I doing here? First and for most I’m here to prove that it can still be done.

This isn’t a personal vendetta (Okay perhaps it might be for a bevy of different reasons), it’s just the human response to “It can’t be done”, “You can’t do it”, “Don’t waste your time”.

Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will. Doubt is toxic and goes hand in hand with insecurity.

I’m not in the business of fostering either emotion. “It can’t be done” are the four most motivational words I can ever hear.

But anyways enough self-pep talk about the player haters (not the disgruntled Fantasy Football patrons who are going against a Running Back who just crossed 200 yards rushing or a wide receiver with his third touchdown reception).

I’m not sure what the parameters of this blog will be moving forward, it’s going to be part documentary style, noting my struggles with development of the iOS App, managing data streams, establishing a Fantasy Football related Podcast (Official name, date and frequency to be determined at a later date).

Enjoy Episode 2 of Tough Season: New Faces Ep.2. I love the draft advice in this one.

Fantasy Bro Sports Blog - The Inception

Welcome to the first blog spot from Fantasy Bro Sports.

Who are we?

We are currently building an iOS Application (Soon to venture on other platforms on day).

My elevator pitch on this goes something like this:

Fantasy Bro Sports is all the Fantasy Football advice you will need available right at your finger tips. People bemoan the risk / reward of determining who they should start on their fantasy football roster.

I know myself and in my social circle this consumes the majority of conversations and subsequent self induced stress. Why can't there be something that takes a mathematical analysis of historical stats, game plans, depth chart and every other factor that could affect a players results on the field for that given week.

It can become another job to keep up with the endless hours of Twitter updates, expert fantasy football blogs, official depth chart listings, rumor mill rumblings and professional analysts that sway your emotions to and from certain players.

Fantasy Bro Sports is the solution.

This blog is going to be my personal outlet for all the dramatic twist and turns on this journey from going from an idea to a product and business.

Unfortunately if you were looking for another blog on expert advice which is main just regurgitated  information from media outlets I'd look elsewhere.

However if you are thinking about your own projects that could be the next big thing hopefully you stick around and become apart of the Fantasy Bro Sports community.

Thank you and good luck on your Fantasy adventures this season.

Enjoy the first episode of Tough Season: Chasing A Repeat Ep. 1
