Off Topic: NBA All Time Records - 3 Pointers Made
Just for a little change of pace we’ll be doing periodic updates through out the rest of the NBA season on veterans who are overtaking the legends on the career records list.
Considering that the National Basketball Association is one of the newer leagues when compared to America’s favorite pastime: Major League Baseball. History is being made on a nightly basis.
One of the most exciting records (in my opinion) to keep track of is the 3 pointers made historical leaderboard.
I grew up watching Ray Allen and Reggie Miller splash treys with regularity. The shooting the 3 ball was always the skill set I was most infatuated with. That being said let’s take a deep dive into the active NBA players who are overtaking the leaderboard.
#3: Stephen Curry
Currently ranked 3rd on all time list with 2442 career 3 pointers. Only trailing 118 behind Reggie Miller. It’ll only be a matter of time before we see Steph sitting in the first spot onboard the active and all time 3 point leaders board. We will likely see this feat early into the 2019-20 NBA Season.
Crunching the Numbers: Even if we estimate Curry playing a healthy 75 games over the next 2 seasons while averaging a modest (4) 3-pointers per game, he will far surpass Ray Allen’s 2973 3-point career total. As of today (3/26/19) he will take the number one spot in 126 regular season games.
#4: Kyle Korver
Behind Steph in the number 4 spot, we have Kyle Korver with 2349. total 3 point makes. Another threat to eventually overtake the king of on-court trash-talk. At 38 years old, there may not be much left in the tank for the veteran sharp-shooter. He’s currently avergaing (2) 3-pointers per game, as he finishes out this season as a member of the Utah Jazz.
#5: Vince Carter / #6: Jamaal Crawford
Sitting in the 5th and 6th spots all-time are Vince Carter and Jamaal Crawford with 2218 and 2199 respectively. Both have a chance at Jason Terry’s spot at 5th overall. Terry currently holds sole possesion of 5th with 2282 makes from behind the arc.
Crunching the Numbers: With Carter primed to give it a go for one more season, we can see him dropping another 100 or so 3-pointers before he rides off into the sunset. At 42 years young, Vince Carter is still logging an admirable 17 minutes per game with the Atlanta Hawks.
Jamaal Crawford on the other hand may have some more seasons under his belt before it’s all said and done, but he’s averaging less than (3) 3-point attempts per game and less than one make. My best guess is that they both overtake Terry, but we shall see what the basketball gods have in store.
#10: James Harden
James Harden is only 2 treys away from overtaking Jason Kidd for 9th overall.
#11: Joe Johnson
Joe Johnson is only 11 away from over taking Kidd as well.
#12: Dirk Nowitzki
Let’s not discount the great Dirk from also finishing ahead of Kidd, but at 23 three’s away on his farewell tour. It’s a feat i’m rooting for but may not necessarily see happen before the end of this season.
#13: J. R. SMITH
J.R Smith is not far behind Dirk with 1929 makes, but his return to the hardwood is anyone’s guess.
#17: Klay Thompson
Klay Thompson only needs 10 more threes to jump ahead of Rashard Lewis who finished his career with a total of 1787.
The big question: Am I a psychopath for even caring about the all-time ranks?
The succienct answer: Yes, I am.
With the 2018-19 NBA season ending on April 10th there isn’t much time left to clear those hurdles.
